How can I bleach my hair for peek-a-boo highlights?

I want to bleach my hair like Gwen Stefani platinum blonde, but my hair is naturally brown. I hate going to my regular salon, because I always magically end up looking like a mom (?). I want to do this by myself because I like to do things by myself such as piercings and hair cuts and clothes and stuff like that. Please give me ideas. And if worst comes to worst, and some of your suggestions suck, I'll just settle for going to my hair dresser:P.

It is very difficult to put in natural blonde highlights by yourself, and even more difficult to avoid damaging your hair. I'd suggest you go to a hair dresser. :)
